Unlock the World of HF Communications

The General Class License is the second level of amateur radio licensing in the United States, and it opens the door to worldwide communication. With expanded access to the HF bands, General licensees can explore long-distance (DX) contacts, new modes, and a much broader amateur radio experience.


Why Upgrade to General?

Upgrading to the General license significantly expands your privileges and options:

  • Operate on most HF bands (1.8 to 29.7 MHz)
  • Make long-distance contacts using voice, CW, and digital modes
  • Participate in HF nets, contests, and special events
  • Access portions of the 160, 80, 40, 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meter bands
  • Increase your effectiveness in emergency communications and public service

Exam Overview

  • Prerequisite: Must hold a Technician license
  • Number of Questions: 35
  • Passing Score: 26 correct answers (74%)
  • Format: Multiple choice
  • Topics Covered:
    • Advanced operating practices
    • Rules, band plans, and signal identification
    • More detailed electronic theory
    • Propagation characteristics and antenna theory
    • Safety and station setup for HF operation

There is still no Morse code requirement for this or any amateur license.

Taking the Exam

  • Exams are offered by Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (VECs) like ARRL, W5YI, GLAARG
  • Sessions available in-person and via remote online testing
  • After passing, your FCC license is automatically updated with new privileges and your call sign remains the same
